Malarvadi Arts Club marks the directorial debut of actor-singer Vineeth Sreenivasan. In his debut film Vineeth takes us to Manassery, a small village in Kerala where five youngsters, Prakash (Nivin Pauly), Santhosh (Shraavan), Praveen (Harikrishnan), Purushu (Bhagat Manuel) and Kuttu (Aju Varghese), get ready to take the biggest leap into life.

One of the most eagerly awaited films of the year, Malarvadi Arts Club  is a predictable story of friendship between five young men, seemingly inspired from Hindi films, Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai and Rock On.

Malarvadi Arts Club has its bit of imperfections. However the film’s music is its biggest component although it seems to score an average throughout the narration. Though one may expect moments of pure fun from the son of Sreenivasan, comedy is not a strong point of the movie. But there are satirical dialogues which reminds one of Vineeth’s father.

Veteran actors like Nedumudi Venu and Jagathy Sreekumar, popular ones like Salim Kumar and Suraj Venjarumood have added to the movie’s strength. The new faces were alright; their inexperience not that evident.  Maybe it is because there were no huge expectations from this debutant director that it rose so high in the scale of the first set of people that broke out of the theatre.

Of the performers Nivin Pauly and Bhagath Manuel seemed to score pretty high on the performance chart.

Vineeth’s arts club is not a perfect movie but some of the scenes you cannot be ignored.

Jean reviews Raavanan, one of the most awaited films of the year! Directed by Mani Rathnam, Raavanan has released to a lot of expectation. (The film has also released in Hindi as Raavan).
His verdict: Watch Raavanan without expectations. Watch it for what it offers and do not look for what you want!
The story: Veera (Vikram), as Raavanan and his elder brother Singam (Prabhu), younger brother Sakkarai (Munna) live in a tribal village. Veera runs his own local government and his followers trust his decision as the final word. He is the strength and identity of the tribe. He is loved and respected by everyone in his community so much so that they are ready to lay down their lives for him!
Dev (Prithviraj), is the special task force Superintendent of Police, along with a forest guard (Karthik) is on the hunt for Veera. His wife Ragini (Aishwarya Rai) accompanies him on his mission. However in one such capture-Veera operation, Veera’s sister Vennaila (Priyamani) is captured by the special task force and raped in the police station.
Bitter over the humiliation, Veera kidnaps Ragini and keeps her hostage for two weeks. What happens next is what makes up the movie.

Technically the film has many plus points, the main attraction being the amazing camera work by Santosh Sivan. His shots, angles and presentation are superb. The final fight between Vikram and Prithviraj is very different, with picture-perfect top angle shots and camera movements.

Mani Ratnam has sketched his characters amazingly. Hats off Santosh, you’ve done a splendid job! A R Rahman’s music is classy. Watch it for Mani Ratnam’s direction, Vikram’s performance and the beautiful locations!

Chicken Chukka Recipe

Chicken Chukka

Ingredients

Chicken:         1Kg
Onion:              1/2kg
Garlic:            6pods
Ginger:            I piece
Cumin powder: ½ tsp
Green chilly:       2-3
Kashmiri Chili powder:     2 spoons
Turmeric:                            Pinch
Tomatoes: 2
Lemon juice:  2tsp
Curry leaves
Salt
Coconut oil

Method

Clean chicken and marinate with chili powder, salt, turmeric, cumin powder, lemon juice and ginger-garlic paste for half an hour.

Heat oil in a pan. Shallow fry the chicken pieces. Remove.

In the remaining oil, fry onions. Reduce flame and add chili powder, cumin powder, chopped garlic and ginger, slit green chilies, curry leaves, turmeric powder and salt. Fry lightly. Add chopped tomatoes. Mix well. To this mixture add the chicken pieces. Cook covered on slow flame. For 3-4 minutes till juices combine with chicken.

Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot.

Below are the dishes we sampled!

Mushroom Biriyani recpie

Ingredients

Jeerakasala Rice:  2 Cups
Mushroom: 2 cups
Mint leaves:  3/4 packet
Coriander leaves: 1/2 Packet
Red chilies:         5
Ginger:           1 piece
Garlic:          8 cloves
Fennel seeds (perumjeerakam): 1 tsp
Cinnamon, Cloves, Cardamom: 2 each
Onion:          2
Salt
Turmeric powder: 1/4 tsp
Water: 3 cups (includes milk extracted from coconut and 1 cup mushroom gravy)
 
Method

Heat oil. Add fennel seeds, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Fry lightly. Add sliced onion and sauté for 2 minutes.

Grind together mint and coriander leaves, red chilies, ginger and garlic, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon. Add this ground mixture to the sautéed onion.
Sauté till it turns brown. Add mushroom and pressure cook till tender.

Soak the rice in water for ten minutes and drain it.
When the mushroom is cooked, add the soaked rice to the gravy. Add 2 cups of water (including half cup of coconut milk) and salt. Mix well. Add ghee (clarified butter)
Cover and pressure cook. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

Born to Gnanalekshmi and Gopinathan Pillai in Kollam on June 25, Suresh Gopi, who entered the film industry as a child artist, shot to stardom in the 1990s with Thalastanam by Shaji Kailas and scripted by Renji Panicker. In fact, all his early hits, such as Commissioner, Ekalavyam were directed by Shaji Kailas and all of them were more or less based on the police-drama theme. His role as Bharatchandran IPS in the blockbuster movie Commissioner made Suresh Gopi the darling of the industry. Renji Panicker’s dialogues which Suresh Gopi employed in English became quite popular with the masses! From then, there was no looking back!

Most of his films were dubbed in Telugu making him and instant star in Andhra Pradesh. Not only did he perfom with aplomb in his role as the Police Officer, but he also ventured into playing character roles in films such as Paithrukam and the hugely famous Manichithrathazu (1993) and Sathyan Anthikkad’s Samooham.

In 1997, with Jayaraj’s Kaliyattam (1997), an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, Suresh Gopi won the precious National Film Award for Best Actor for playing Kannan Perumalayan. He proved he was more than just another mainstream actor. This certainly was a turning point in his career.

In the late 90s, he was noted for playing in Joshi’s films such as Lelam (1998) and Pathram (1999), again, scripted by Renji Panicker. He played Nasrani character Chackochi in Lelam and journalist Nandagopal in Pathram where he co-starred with Manju Warrier. Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, and Manju Warrier teamed up in Sibi Malayil’s Summer in Bethlahem (1998) which was a commercial success.

Before coming to the film world, he had displayed great interest in the field of literature; his favourite authors are Bernard Shaw and Shakespeare. He is famous for his philanthropic efforts.

In 2008, Suresh Gopi appeared in multi-starrer Twenty: 20. Again, he acted with Mohanlal in Pakal Nakshatrangal, an off-beat movie directed by Rajiv Nath.

An English Literature graduate from Fatima National College, Kollam, Gopi has four children and is settled at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

He writes the lyrics of most of his album songs and has also shown his direction skills, directing his own music videos. His music album Coffee @ MG Road was an instant hit, among the young and old alike. He got first prize in Mappilappattu in the Kerala State Youth Festival 1998, where he outshone his ability for quick wit.
Vineeth recently won the AMMA Best Male Singer Award 2008 for his songs Mampullikkavil and Jillu Jillu and also the Best Male new face of the year 2008 by Asianet, for his role in Cycle.

Vineeth is currently scripting a new movie which he will direct with seven new young actors.

He recieved the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award (1996)  for his book titled Gowry.

Jean reviews Malayalam film In Ghost House Inn.

His verdict: Not so funny this time.

Ok, we agree that this film has the three most lovable characters who have kept us in splits over the years with their funny acts in Harihar Nagar series. In the third part, the trio comes back together for another episode of fun and laughter.

In the film In Ghost House Inn, the three friends, Mahadevan (Mukesh), Appukuttan (Jagadeesh) and Govindankutty( Siddique) are invited to ‘Dorothy Bunglow’ by Thomaskutty (Ashokan), who is planning to convert the bungalow into a Hotel resort. And to dispel any fears about ghosts of some people murdered there, he invites his friends with their families to spend a few nights there.

A little afraid at first, the three friends however decide to show their support to their friend and visit Thomaskutty.

What follows is a new combination of horror-comedy.

The movie is packaged as a mindless entertainer and will get the applause of those who never attempt to search for any logic between proceedings.

The highlights of the movie are in its climax and the excellent camerawork by Venu.
Music by Alex paul is passable. As with most sequesls, this one has lost steam after the second one.
The incomparable dynamics of Harihar Nagar is what is sadly missing in this Ghost House, and it goes without saying that it could prove fatal.

The creators of the mass masala movie ‘Thanthonny’ have tried their very best to copy-paste sequences of past hit films to create a potpourri. The result is a confusing mix of past and present, in other words it’s like the meeting of Usthad and Devasuram!

The movie has Prithviraj as a rebel hero, who lives in a joint patriarchal family named Valiyaveettil. Prithvi fondly called Kochukunju is the spoilt grandson of Kochousepph and only son of Kathrina, whose three brothers control the family affairs.

Prithviraj however had a mysterious past. He was thrown out of his home years ago only to return a decade later. One is lead to believe that Kochukunju is an evil sort of person, but only later come to know that in reality he is a do-gooder who holds a big secret. The audience is made aware of the secret only as the film unfolds.

Prithviraj tries hard to fit into the shoes of veteran actors like Mohanlal, even making an attempt at lighter sequences and comic dialogues. Although T A Shahid’s script has some interesting dialogues interspersed in between it struggles to strike a balance between heroism and emotions.

Watch it only if you are a die-hard rebel star of Mollywood.

We spoke to them at length. Here is what they say:

Thahir (as narrated by Fijeesh, his brother). Thahir was born deaf and mute, but always wanted to be independent. So, like his brother Fijeesh who was in Dubai, he followed his dream of coming here. Soon, he found a position in a company dealing with sun-glasses. Back home in India, his mother missed him, missed hearing him. So every time she called Fijeesh, she asked him to pass along the phone to Thahir. For her, any sound he made was enough. That satisfied her. That’s why we thought we would bury the distance between mother and son…if not through words, they could share moments of togetherness!

Harris: Harris has always been his mom’s pet! His father worked in a labour camp for long years before returning to his home country. Harris was lucky to find employment as a driver in Dubai. But we all know times are hard and it was not possible for Harris to visit home as often as he liked.

Ashik Salam:  He has been in the UAE for the last 13 years. Both his parents are teachers. As we all know, teachers are usually paid little, but to give their son Ashik and siblings a better life, they made a lot of sacrifices. On one instance, when Ashik wanted to go on a school excursion and had no money, his mother sold one of her gold bangles to fund his trip. Three cheers for Ashik’s mother! We truly believe that she deserves this treat.

Anish: He has been in the UAE for the last 3 years. Anish’s father passed away when he was very young and it was left to his mother Saramma to look after the children. She did not remarry. As a lab technician, she had to struggle long and hard to educate him, striving very hard to make ends meet, in the end succeeding in making her son an engineer.

The story

Jayakrishnan (Dileep) has a strange passion. To be seen with the brave and powerful. He doesn’t mind taking risks just to among them. He leaves college to train as a body guard for the goons in his locality. One day he hears of the city’s feared goon, Ashokan (Thyagarajan) and sets out to befriend him. He gets lucky when he accidentally rescues Ashokan and his family from being murdered. He lands a job as Ashokan’s bodyguard.

Ashokan bids goodbye to his earlier life and settles down to a retired life, keeping on the right side of the law.
When Asokan’s daughter Ammu (Nayanthara) rejoins her college for her final year, Jayakrishnan is sent along, posing as a student, to give her the needed protection.

From here, the protagonist turns comic and for most part, you see him in suits and sun glasses, accompanying Ammu and her friend Sethulakshmi everywhere. Annoyed with this, Ammu finds various ways to get rid of him, trying unsuccessfully to find him a girlfriend.  When she finds no takers, she herself takes the plunge and begins to pretend to be in love with him, eventually falling in love with him.

The movie has great visuals and steady narration, although the chemistry between the lead stars leaves much to be desired. But the movie definitely has its moments. Dileep has been successful in generating few laughs and Nayantara looks elegant and stylish.

A good watch, nevertheless.

This delicacy, Nadan Kozhi Kumbalanga (Chicken with white pumpkin) is typical of people living in Thrissur region of Kerala is indeed delicious. According to Sherry, this recipe has been lost to time. We appreciate this effort to revive this wonderful dish!

Ingredients:
(If you do not find country chicken, you can substitute it with any other chicken type you may find)

 
Chicken – Medium sized pieces
White pumpkin – 300 gms cut into cubes
Onion – 3 (chopped)
Turmeric powder- A pinch
Ginger – One big piece (chopped)
Garlic – 5 pods (chopped)
Green chilies – 1 or 2 (slit)
Tomatoes – 1 (chopped)
Curry leaves- one hand full
Garam masala powder- 1-2 tsp
Red chili powder- 1-2 tsp
Coriander powder- 2tbs
Turmeric powder- 2tsp
Curd- 1/4 cup
Salt – to taste
Pepper powder – 1 tsp
Coconut oil – to sauté
Coconut milk – as required
Grated coconut – 3 tbs (roast it golden brown and powder it and keep it aside)
Small onions – chopped
 
 
Method

1. Marinate chicken pieces with chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt, coconut oil (few drops) and curd.
2. Heat oil in a pan. Sauté onions, ginger, garlic, green chilies till golden.
3. Add garam masala, followed by chopped tomatoes and curry leaves.
4. Sauté till oil starts appearing on the sides.
5. Add marinated chicken and coconut milk.
6. Bring to a boil on slow fire.
7. Add the pumpkin pieces. Cook well.
8. Add the browned, powdered coconut.
9. Heat a little oil in another vessel. Fry the small onions and curry leaves nd add this to the chicken curry.
10. Serve with rice or chappatti.

The village of Chembattunadu, renamed Chattambinaadu following the settlement of chattambis (goons), forms the crux of the story.

Veerendra Mallaya (Mammootty) a wealthy a Kannadiga with several criminal cases slapped on him arrives in the village to buy a mansion owned by Mallachira Chandramohan (Manoj K Jayan).

Right from day one, he declares war against another wealthy villager Kattapilli Nagendran (Siddhique). Amidst confusions, the mysteries unveil with enjoyable sidetracks by local chattambies (goons), Makri, Goplan and Dasamoolam Damu played by Salimkumar and Suraj respectively.

Mmmootty is great in his role, however, following the success of Rajamanickayam, Madambi and Mayavi, the narrative tends to get all- too-familiar and predictable. Chattambinaadu is an out-and-out Mammootty film, even with a repeat white pajama- kurtha dress code.

Watch out for the two sentimental scenes where he manages to impress everyone, even with heavy Kannada dialogues. Vinu Mohan as his trusted aide Murugan, is a role that the youngsters will love. Lakshmi Rai and Mythili barely manage their roles.

If you are a fan of Mammootty, you are sure to lap up Chattambinaadu! And for others, if you had been with the likes of cross- border movies this is another chance for reminiscence. If you can leave logic at home you might just enjoy a free run for two hours.

His verdict: An absolutely well made movie. A Must watch.

Ivide Swargamaanu is a one movie to watch out for. Starring Mohan Lal, this film while being realistic, topical and entertaining, forces you to think about the world around you. And surprisingly, there are no songs in this 170 minutes film.

Director Roshan Andrews has certainly put in a lot of effort in narrating a pertinent story without the frills of conventional film making techniques. Though the pattern may appear regressive to new age audience, Ivide Swaragamaanu definitely appeals to the mass audience for it sheer brilliance.

Mohanlal plays Mathews, a self taught agriculturist and a farm house owner, who with the help of his family is maintaining a highly productive farmland, named after his father Jermias (Thilakan). Into their life arrives Aluva Chandy, (Lalu Alex) a scheming businessman determined to grab this piece of land as he has received a huge sum as advance from an industrialist desirous of developing the area as a tourist destination.

Chandy advertises his plans to develop the serene hamlet into a township, pushing up land prices, offering the local men big jobs, acquiring their pieces of land and pressurizing Mathews to sell his farmland. When Mathews refuses, Chandy uses government machinery to create trouble for him.

The movie goes on to tell how the simpleton Mathews finds ways to fight this ‘land mafia’ and to survive the impending pressures to maintain his land for ever.

The movie makes an ordinary start but gradually builds up tension and curiosity and the final hour of the movie is fantastic, with carefully thought out scenes, and brilliant one-liners.

Mohanlal does the perfect victim turned vanquisher roles but it won’t be wrong to say that the film belongs to Lalu Alex who excels in his roles as the villain. Priyanka Nair, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Lakshmi Rai, have played their parts well.

Ten short stories come to life in the latest film by director Ranjith. Kerala Café has brought in a sea of change in the Malayalam film industry heavy on theme-based scripts.

Finally Malayalam directors are proving beyond doubt that they are the best when it comes to effective narrations. Kerala Café, based on a simple theme of journey is a stepping stone to more accommodative scripts.

The stories in Kerala Cafe, though based on a common theme are different in style and making with their own messages. The film is based around Kerala Café, a hotel at a railway station where various characters from the movie pass through, without actually being acquainted.

The film starts with a prologue by Sathyan Anthikkad who warns you about the experimental nature of the film and what to look forward to. Among the ten stories, Anwar Rasheed’s Bridge takes the cake. Bridge is a tale told in two parallel tracks about a young boy who finds a kitten on the street and about a son (Salim Kumar) who is forced to leave his ailing mother in the streets.

Anjali Menon’s Happy Journey is another stand out movie with a small thread about the psyche of middle aged Malayalee men. This short is an effective hilarious take about an insurance surveyor (Jagathy) who likes to flirt a little. Jagathy tries to flirt with a pretty girl while they are on the same bus from Ernakulam to Kozhikkode, but the girl proves too smart for the man to handle. Jagathy Sreekumar after a long time, has got the space to prove his versatility while Nithya as the sweet yet shrewd girl, proves that she is here to stay.

Lal Jose’s Puram Kazhchakal starring Mammootty and Sreenivasan is subtle and effective in narration, while debutant director Shankar Ramakrishnan’s Island Express takes time to settle with diverse unlinked characters but offers heavy appeal towards the end when the real theme unleashes in that spectacular run.

Don’t miss Kerala Café for anything or you might just end up missing one of the finest works in Malayalam till date.

Loudspeaker is about Phillipose (Mammootty) who is literally born with a mike down his throat. His habit of speaking in a pitch far above the ordinary earns him the name ‘Mike’ and lands him in trouble once too after he comes to the city to donate kidney to Menon (Sashikumar).

Menon allows Phillipose to share his flat in the city but little does he know that that Mike Phillipose would bring more trouble than he bargained for! The kids in the building however take a fancy to this man-of-the –hills and his loud voice, but not the building secretary (Jagathy Sreekumar) who is looking for ways to throw him out. Things go completely out of hands and the kind hearted Menon is forced to rethink his decision of allowing Mike to stay with him!

What happens after this is quite unexpected. In fact, from this point onwards the film suddenly turns a notch serious and the simplicity of the films simply charms you, if you can ignore the few instances of emotional overdose.

Loudspeaker has a few things going for it, such as Mammootty’s stellar performance as ‘Mike’, in contrast to his some of his recent meaningless roles. Gracy Singh, the Bollywood beauty who warmed our hearts with her great performance in Oscar-nominated film Lagaan has made an entry into the world of Malayalam films with her role as Annie, Menon’s nurse and is quite good.

Director Jeyaraj in his penchant for making non-actors into actors has roped in Sashikumar for the role of Menon and managed to get some decent screen time from him!

Great job, Jeyaraj.

Born in Muppathadom, Nimmy moved to Dubai in 2004 and since then, the place that she has come to love most in this non-stop city, is the sanctuary that is Za’abeel Park. This has no doubt got something to do with her two favourite Dubai pastimes, gardening and nature.

But life in this ever-moving town has its downside, and one thing the popular host of Swaranghal could live without, she says, is Dubai’s traffic! Wouldn’t we all?

Although, she admits she has held long-time passion for entertainment, and has more than 200 certificates won at talent shows to prove it!
